Welcome to the website of the 1st UK Gliding Grand Prix!
The UK Qualifying Gliding Grand Prix has been added into this season's calendar in early September. The Cambridge Gliding Centre will host the event, which is the first ever UK Gliding Grand Prix.
This soaring event is a new type of International competition intended to make competitive gliding understandable to the public and attractive to potential sponsors. The first experimental Sailplane Grand Prix events were held in January 2001 in Gawler, Australia (parallel to the first Club Class World Gliding Championships) and in June 2003 in Saint-Auban France.
As a result the International Gliding Commission sanctioned a biennial World Grand Prix, the first of which was at St. Auban in France in 2005. The venue for the 2007 WGP has been announced as New Zealand, and the winner of the UK event will be assured of a place there.
The rules are simple. 20 pilots flying the same class of glider, flying the same task, starting at the same time. The first competitior passing the finishing line wins the day and scores 10 points, second place 9 points, third place 8 points and so on. The competitor with the most points after 6 days wins the Grand Prix.
The entry list is currently full, but you can still get on the reserve list for a non-refundable deposit of £5. To apply go to www.gliding.co.uk/grandprix>. |
